Thailand Travel Guide -> Mae Hong Son ->Fish Cave & Wat Phra That Doi Khung Mu |
| The
tour to Fish Cave takes you on an interesting ride through the mountains
and valleys of the Mae Hong Son province's countryside. Fish Cave
is actually not just a cave but an entire country park, very popular among
the locals.
You need a car or bike or you could take public transportation - the bus to Pai (the tour is most worthwhile if you have your own transportation - however, as that way you can stop and enjoy the views, or take pictures, whenever you want). Drive about 17 kilometers on highway Nr. 1095 in the direction of Pai and turn left at the sign that says "Fish Cave". (On the way you can stop at a hot spring, but it is really not much to look at - a house with a rectangular pool that is filled with dark, muddy looking smelly water, that is all. You can skip it without missing much. ) Park you car at the sign and walk about 200 meters until you see a narrow bridge, Cross it and after a few minute's walk you are at the cave. Next to it is a pool with large fish that you can feed with bread (you can buy the bread at the park's official hut). We admit that this does not sound very exciting :-) ,but it is actually a very nice trip and recommendable. the real attraction is the lovely setting and the beautiful mountain panorama beyond the valley. Walk into the park, watch the Thai day visitors. mostly families with their children, visit the nearby temple, sit down at one of the stalls that offer drinks and snacks, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. After you have enjoyed everything to the fullest, drive slowly back to Mae Hong Son.
When you arrive at the small town, take the road up to Wat Phra That Doi Khung Mu. This is a very lovely temple in the same style as the Wat Jong Klong or Wat Kong Kum at the lake. Admire the beautiful Chedis, and, above all, the stunning view of the mountains that surround Mae Hong Son. If you came in the late afternoon stay there until evening and watch the sun set over the countryside from the parapet at the western rim - this is indeed one the most beautiful views in Thailand! |
