| Where
to Stay - City Districts & Hotel Areas
Many
of the famous sights of Bangkok are located at or near the Chao Phraya
river - simply because this is the oldest and historically and culturally
most important part of the city. For this reason, it is often a good idea
to choose a hotel near the river (you will save a lot of time that would
otherwise be spent in taxies on the city`s crowded roads) . (Please see
our City Map). Good hotels are the Mandarin
Oriental
(of course!), the Shangri-La,
or the Royal Orchid Sheraton, or, just
as nice but less expensive, the Bangkok
Marriot Resort & Spa in Thonburi - by many considered
one of the most pleasant hotels in the city. It is located in Thonburi,
on the other side of the Chao Phraya, a 20 minute ride with the hotel`s
shuttle boat away from the city center). Located in the commercial
district are the hotels of the Amari chain (Amari
Boulevard, Amari Watergate, and so on)
or the Rembrandt, also comfortable,
but less expensive than the hotels mentioned above. Please find information
about 30 hotels in our Hotel Discount Guide -
a lot of them with special prices and
discounts.
What to See & Do Bangkok is a fascinating mix of chaos and tranquility. Few people like the city at first sight - it seems too large, too noisy, too congested, and too crowded with people, buildings, and vehicles of all kind. However, you will find here - very often where you would least expect it - among all the noise and traffic quiet and shadowy temple courtyards, peaceful alleys, lined by old teakwood houses, where time seems to have stood still, and the golden towers and Buddha statues of the city´s splendid temples and palaces. Take a temple tour! Or explore the famous Klongs with a slim longtail motor boat! By the way, "Bangkok"- that is not the real name of the city. The real and full name is:"Krung Thep Manakhon Bovorn Ratanskosin Magintharayutthaya Mahadilokpop Noparatratchathani Burirom Udomratchanivetmahasathan Avatartsathit Sakkathattiya Visnukarmrasit" - translated: "City of Angels, greatest of all cities, home of the emerald Buddha, immortal, precious jewel, invincable stronghold, ancient and honourable, crownded with nine jewels, heavenly city, founded by Indra and rebuilt by Vishnu"Thais use the short version: Krung Thep (City of Angels). By the way, it was founded by King Rama I, who also built Wat Phra Keaw, the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace. Of course, therea are also other palaces and museums, for instance the National Museum with its large collection, or Vimarn Mek (Golden Cloud), a palace built entirely of Teak and full of interesting furniture and antiques from the time of King Chulalongkorn. And if you feel that you`ve had enough of the city, Ayuthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand with its lovely temple ruins is only an hour away.
