Krom and Tonlé Sap
|
If you ever get tired of visiting temples at Angkor, a half day trip to the Tonlé Sap (Great Lake) will be a welcome change. The Tonlé Sap is South-East Asia's largest freshwater lake and has always played an important role in the life of the Cambodians. It is connected via the Tonlé Sap river with the Mekong (and thus also to the sea). The lake increases considerably in size during each rainy season (the flooded areas that you see when you fly to Siem Reap airport during or immediately after the monsoons are all the expanded Tonlé Sap). You can reach the lake in ca 20 minutes by car from Siem Reap, and the trip can be combined with a visit to Phnom Krom, a large hill with a sandstone temple from the early tenth century, built by Yasovarman I (who also founded Phnom Bakheng).
Khmer Child on the Staircase of Phnom Krom A long, but solid and safe modern staircase leads to the top of the hill. You come first to a new Buddhist temple, from there turn left and then climb some more steps to Phnom Krom. The temple is square in plan and three towers. The sandstone structures are largely intact, but the decoration has eroded. The main attraction is the superb view of the Tonlé Sap and the surrounding area. At the foot of the hill is a village, where you can rent a boat to take you along Vietnamese and Cham villages into the lake itself. The larger boats have solid roofs and can seat up to 10 people. The rent for one or one and a half hour is 15 to 20 USD. The trip takes you along to the "floating villages " - houses, schools, and a police station - all on stilts.
You can see the large barges and cargo boats that carry goods to and from Phnom Penh, speed boats that can reach Phnom Penh in five hours, and of course lots of smaller fishing boats.
After
1/2 hours you reach the lake itself - a large sheet of water, almost like
a little ocean. Your boat will turn back now and return to the village.
