It is a charming account of two Americans who in the 1930s decided to open a small hotel in Bali. It contains all kinds of warm-hearted stories about encounters with Balinese people and lots of information about life in Bali in the first half of this century. (A number of pictures by  the authors are exhibited in a special pavillon in the Museum Neka in Ubud; perhaps you would like to visit it during your stay on Bali.

This is a novel written by Vicki Baum, a very successful German novelist of the 1930s, who spent some years on Bali in the company of Walter Spies and his friends. The book tells the story of a Balinese family, their love affairs, marriages, good and ill fortune, during the Dutch invasion and the catastrophe at Klungkung at the beginning of this century. Although it is written from the point of view of an outsider and has sometimes been criticized as been pro-colonist, it makes a charming read and can give you an impression of traditional Balinese village life as it used to be before the Second World War .
