| Pura Uluwatu This is a short excursion that takes you to one of the most ancient and sacred temples of Bali. Pura Uluwatu is located on the most southwest tip of Bali. The excursion is best done in the afternoon. In the morning you can enjoy your hotel garden or walk along the beach or swim, and at about 3.00 p.m. you hire a driver and car and let the driver take you there. The landscape is rocky and dry and very different from the lush, green rest of Bali. Pura Uluwatu is a large temple complex built of carved grey coral limestone on top of a cliff.
A family of little monkeys lives there that are notorious for stealing visitor`s sunglasses or earrings. They can be quite nasty and it is best to stay away from them (alternatively you can bribe them with bananas or rose apples - the vendors in front of the temple have a large selection!). Walk around the temple area, admire the stone carvings in the gates and the statues and enjoy the beautiful and spectacular view of the Indian Ocean while the sun slowly dips into the sea. Tanah Lot Tanah Lot, perhaps the most well-known temple on Bali, is also watched best at sunset. Tanah Lot is located on the coast northwest of Kuta. You can reach it from Sanur or Nusa Dua just as easily as Pura Uluwatu. The temple is built on a rock a little bit off-shore (walking there is only possible at low tide) and it can only be entered by worshippers (i.e. it is not open to tourists). Tanah Lot is nevertheless worth looking at it from the cliffs with its black roofs (called "merus" against the sky that make it look like a Chinese painting. Just sit somewhere and have a soft drink and enjoy the sunset.
