Bali Travel Guide ->  Sightseeing-> Ubud

You can do this either as a morning tour or add it to the tour Central Bali  with Ubud as the starting point.

If you start from the south, you drive through Mas and Teges and then turn right and afterwards south to Yeh Pulu. Yeh Pulu is a collection of reliefs that show animals and scenes form Balinese village life. From the entrance it is a very pleasant walk through rice fields to the reliefs. It is a very sweet, charming, and (relatively) quiet place.

The next stop is Pura Pentaran Sasih, which houses the "Moon of Pejeng", which is one of the two largest bronze kettles in the world (the other one is in Lamphun, in the north of Thailand). Pura Pentaran Sasih is a classic period temple with lots of pavilions, and shrines, and statues. The gong is 2000 years old and thus a proof that very advanced bronze casting techniques were known on Bali from an early time. It is hung up in one of the pavilions at the back side of the temple. There is a funny story about the gong, ask one of the temple guides to tell it to you.

From Pura Pentaran Sasih you drive through Teges and Peliatan to Ubud. Ubud has been attracting artists and painters for several decades and today you can you find an incredible number of art galleries and shops that sell all kinds of decorative items.

Ubud houses two museums that are both very much worth a visit. The first is the Museum Puri Lukisan that is located in a lovely garden full of plants and lotos ponds with statues. It has a large collection of pictures by Balinese Artists that show scenes from Balinese village life as it was in former times: people growing and harvesting rice, celebrating a wedding, preparing a temple ceremony. They also have some classical-style pictures with scenes of tourist activities (for instance, surfing in Kuta or watching bathing villagers with telescopes), viewed through the eyes of the Balinese - very interesting! The Museum has a website!

The second museum is the Museum Neka. It is located a little bit outside of Ubud and has a pretty view of a very lush green valley. It also has a large collection of classical and more recent Balinese art. Try to find the pavilion with sketches from I Gusti Nyoman Lempad , Bali`s most important artist in this century - it is a very lovely series of scenes from the life of Mother Brayut, a Balinese woman with a lot, lot of children that portray her life and the life of her family.

When you leave the museum, take some time to buy a drink at the open air cafeteria outside and enjoy the beautiful view of the valley before you head back to your hotel.
