Nice
& inexpensive accomodation
Q: I
am a 31 year old Australian female planning a holiday on my own to Bali.
This will be my first trip alone and I would like advice on
accomodation
for under US$40 per night in or near Kuta that attracts
young people
but not too busy or noisy.
A: Tuban or
Legian (but Legian is expensive) are very
near to Kuta
but should nevertheless be not too noisy. We do not offer many hotels in
that price range on our web site, but you can find a good selection at Asiarooms:
Honeymoon Hotels
Q: Hello,
I have reached your pages about Bali and I think you have done a very good
job. Pages are full of good information and with a nice attitude. I reviewed
the hotel guide section and found it to be very nice, but unfortunately,
since I do not have any idea of Bali, I can not distingusih among many
locations/towns in Bali. I am getting married this summer and a honeymoon
in Bali will be a very nice surprise and a good wedding present to my wife.
Can you please help me with choosing a town/hotel in Bali? I want nice beaches,
romantic scenery. Night life is not so important to us. We also want
a very good hotel so that we can remember this trip for all our life.
A: Dear Reader,
what about Jimbaran or Legian? Jimbaran has a nice, white sand beach that
is good forswimming and there is a selection of very nice, upmarket hotels.
I recommend the Ritz Carlton or the
Four Seasons. An alternative
is Legian Beach (however, although the beach looks great, swimming there can
be dangerous). The Bali Oberoi is
located there, one of the best hotels in the world.
Another hotel
I liked very much is the Serai in
Manggis (Eastern Bali). It is a small luxury property, very secluded and
romantic, with good access to the sightseeing spots in that part ofthe island.
They have a small private dark sand beach. We recommend the upstairs rooms;
they have nice balconies. The Amankila
Hotel, directly adjacent is also very good, but more expensive.

Losmen
Q: I am traveling
around the world with my partner and we are planning to be in Bali from dec
22nd till feb3rd and we are looking for accommodation. I have researched
the accommodation situation extensivelyand have come to no real conclusion
on what would be the best for us. We are on a limited budget due to the nature
of our trip (we are 25 and backpacking around) but we are willing to pay
a little more as it is Christmas and we would like to stay somewhere relatively
different. We would ideally like to be near a white sand beach in a losmen
or homestead but I can't really find any defined information on quality
and position of these. We do not really want to be in any of the major towns
or in a hotel complex. Swimming pools, bathrooms, service and catering are
of no importance to us, just nice accommodation in a nice area for approx
$30 (US) a night (for us both) This may be asking a lot but I understand
that the losmen are privately run and relatively inexpensive. If you could
help us out with any contact numbers, web sites, or information services
in bali wherewe can access information about this type of accommodation (I
understand that most loseman etc are not on line) we would be most grateful.
A: Yes, most
losmen are not online. A good losmen offers clean rooms, local furniture
and (access to) a local style bath room ("mandi" bath, Indonesian toilet).
If you are
willing to pay a little bit more, go to our hotel
page and choose "Hotels with rates from 35 to 40 US$." These small hotels
are nice and o.k., some are located on the beach, and they can
be booked from
abroad.

Villas in Bali ?
Q: I
was wondering if you could tell me of nice villas on the North Coast,
there seems to be unlimited accommodation on the South Coast but none North.
We don't want to stay in a commercial resort or hotel, but would like to find
a villa in a nice secluded, romantic setting, good furnishing, safety etc,
can you recommend anywhere?
A: There are
villas for rent in Bali, but they are MORE expensive than a hotel and, just
as you observed yourself, nearly all of them are in the south.
All accomodation
on Bali is "commercial" in the sense that the owner needs a special permit
to lodge guests and has to register you and report your arrival to the police,
etc.
The Mimpi Resort in Menjangan offers serviced
villas for rent at a reasonable price that are located in the compound of
their hotel.
All Inclusive Hotels in Bali?
Q: My husband
and I are new to Asia. We are traveling from Hong Kong (where we have lived
for 3 months) with 2 children (ages 1 and 2.5 years old). We have been quoted
prices from 2 Bali hotels: Club Med in Bali and the Grand Hyatt. Since
we are bringing our helper along, we want a nice resort where our helper
can care for the children, yet have a playground for the children to play
when not napping. Meanwhile, my husband and I want to relax and sight see
around Bali. We are planning on spending 6 to 7 nights there.
My questions
are: Is Club Med (all inclusive) good for us? Or is a Grand Hyatt or Inter
Contintal better?
A: My
personal opinion - all inclusive resorts are ususally not such a good idea
and not even cheaper than other hotels. There is all that animation stuff,
there is no special local atmosphere, etc.
I`d recommend
the Interconti, or, in Nusa Dua,
the Sheraton Laguna (nicer than
the Grand Hyatt). Or, also very good, the Bali Hyatt in Sanur. All those hotels
have children`s playgrounds or Kid`s Clubs.

Beach Front Hotels
Q: Would appreciate
if you could recommend me some beach front hotels at Bali. Would like a place
where I can look out of the room and see the beach right in front and hear
the waves.
Regards, Paul.
A: Dear Paul,
that may be somewhat difficult ... Most hotels in Bali have large gardens
and sea view if often obstructed by foliage or palm fronds.
The deluxe
ocean view rooms of the Meridien
offer good sea view, as well as the Villas at the Bali Ritz Carlton, also the sea-facing
rooms in the upper floor of the Grand
Bali Beach (high-rise!), as well as the sea view rooms in hotels that
are built on a cliff, like the Nikko
or the Bali Cliff (but make sure
that your room description reads "full seaview" or "frontal seaview".

Hotels near the Airport
Q: Which Hotels
in Bali are nearest to the airport? The ones in Denpasar?
A: No, Jimbaran
is the place (at least, the place with international hotels) nearest to the
airport (only a 5 minute drive). You can see from the end of Jimbaran Beach
the airport with the large jets waiting on the runway. Noise, however, is
not a major problem in Jimbaran, because there are not that many flights.
Next comes Sanur (20 minute drive).

Hotel Recommendation
Q: We are
South Africans and we will be travelling to Bali for our Honeymoon,Could
you recommend a classy hotel that is not overpriced and that is in a good
location eg : Sanur , Nasa Dua. Preferably something that is close to the
beach !
A: What about
the Bali Hyatt in Sanur? It is very
nice and reasonably priced. I can really recommend it. An alternative: The
Ritz Carlton (from 130 US$
up) or the Inter-Conti (priced
like the Hyatt) in Jimbaran or the new Meridien Nirwana (prices around 90
US$ per night). My suggestion for a very special honeymoon is the Ritz-Carlton.

Budget Accomodation in Bali
Q: The hotels
on the hotel page are all so expensive! Where can I find information about
cheaper (but not too primitive) small hotesl or bed & breakfasts? Are
there any?
A: Yes, there
is. The only "problem" is that these places don`t have fancy websites or
accept reservations from overseas in other ways (if they did, they would
have to be more expensive). You can find acceptable accomodation (i.e. clean,
with private bathroom, though NOT directly on the beach and without
phone, TV, etc) in Sanur, Kuta or Legian (not in Nusa Dua). For instance,
in Kuta you could try Kuta Pari Bungalows (4 US$ per night), or
the hotel Camplung Mas (1 US$ per night). In Legian rooms at the Sayang Maha
or the Puri Tanah are available for 8 - 20 US; in Sanur, the Taman Agung
Hotel or the Bumi Ayu Bungalows offer contemporary rooms for about 25 US$
per night. Take a taxi or a bemo and tell the driver the hotel name; they
know these places.

Sanur or Nusa
Dua?
Q: What is
nicer: Nusa Dua or Sanur? We hear so many conflicting opinions.
A: It depends
on what you are looking for. The hotels in Nusa Dua are pretty and even elegant
and the beach is o.k. but Nusa Dua is an entirely artificial resort area with
as little contact as possible with the Bali outside it - there is no normal
infrastructure. Some people don`t like this - for others it is just
the right thing. There is no big difference between the beaches in Sanur
and Nusa Dua.
