in Bali -> Central Bali
| You should
not miss the opportunity to see a Balinese Barong Dance. There are
daily public performances at Batubulan or Kesiman (both are near Denpasar,
the dance is the same, but I think the setting Batubulan is nicer); the
performances start at 9.30 a.m. and last about an hour. There are also
regular performances on weekends in Ubud (more
about the Barong Dance).The Barong Dance is really worth seeing and
you should at any rate try to include it in your sightseeing program.
Final Scene from a Barong Dance (Performance by the Batubulan Dance Company) The next stop is Pura Gunung Kawi (not to be confounded with Pura Tirta Gunung Kawi). This is a quiet, sweet place that is not too crowded with tourists. Pura Gunung Kawi consists of several funeral shrines that are carved into the rock. The tombs themselves are nothing spectacular but there is a very pretty little valley with lush green rice terraces. I very much recommend taking a walk through it, but you should take care to stay on the path and not show up in big groups! Your next stop is Pura Tirta Empul, a large temple complex with a pond of holy water. A pilgrimage to the spring is an essential part of every major Balinese ceremony. There are less tourists here than in other major temples and you should take some time to walk around and look at the ornamental stone carvings on the shrines and on the split gates.
Ricefields near Pura Gunung Kawi If you are still not tired and would like to see yet another temple, Pura Tirta Gunung Kawi is not far away. It also has a spring and many beautiful carved pavilions and shrines. On your way back to
the south you can stop in Ubud and have a late lunch at one of the restaurants
there before you get back to you hotel in Sanur, Kuta or Nusa Dua, or spend
the afternoon doing the tour to Ubud.
