Phuket
Travel Guide -> Getting There & Around
Phuket
has in international airport and most visitors arrive via plane
(there are flights from Bangkok every hour and from other places in Thailand
several times a day). A taxi counter is located in the arrival
hall and you should book your transportation to your hotel there. They
have fixed rates for every beach (the fare is about 450 Baht (Status: March
1998) for the southern beaches, less for Bang Tao beach or Nai Yang Beach).
If you leave Phuket by plane on an international flight you have to pay
500,00 Baht departure tax. . Apart from the taxies at the airport you will
probably not find any "real" taxies on Phuket.. Instead there are Tuk-Tuks
(three-wheeled
open vehicles, a kind of motorized trishaw that can drive at an amazing
speed) and Songthaews (lorries or vans with wooden benches for sitting).
If you have to choose between a Tuk-Tuk and a Songthaew, the Tuk-Tuk is
the better alternative. The least recommendable means of transport are
motorbike taxies; try to avoid them (though they may be safer than driving
the motorcycle yourself!) You must always determine the fare before
you enter (or climb on).
Your hotel or a rental car agency can provide you with a rental car (though you should be warned that the traffic conditions are somewhat tricky; it is probably better to hire a driver as well). A lot of tourists rent motorcycles during their stay on Phuket, but driving a motorcycle is really dangerous if you are not thoroughly familiar with both a) the art of riding a motorcycle, and b) the traffic conditions in Asian countries. Getting to the Phi Phi Islands The Phi Phi Islands
can only by accessed by ferryboat (or private boat, of course). There are
only 2 daily scheduled ferries from Phuket to Phi Phi Island each day.
The ferries depart from Phuket pier at 8.30 am and 1.30 pm. Visitors arriving
later than 1:30 pm will need to stay that evening in Phuket. Please allow
40 minutes to get from the aiport to the pier.
